Bollard Installation

Below is an overview on how to install a bollard.  It is just an overview.  All installations must be completed in compliance with local building codes.  Professional installation may be required.

Bollard Placement / Spacing

The placement or spacing of bollards is in many ways dependent on the site and a client’s preferences.  This is because bollards have a somewhat restricted light distribution and the requirements vary depending on where they are used.  Variables are other sources of light, the needs of the area, aesthetics, and for lighting to be effective there has to be some uniformity in the levels of lighting.

As with any walkway, light can be provided by bollards, but in many areas the light level is augmented by wall packs, street lights, and other area lights.  Also, bollard spacing may be based on architectural or aesthetic reasons.  For instance lighting by a river walk a boardwalk, or marina is not just a matter of light levels measured in foot candles.  In other words there are many variables and few hard and fast rules.

Below are considerations when deciding the placement of your bollard installation.

Frequently used spacing for bollards

  • Hospitals, offices, and residential walkways use a smaller spacing, 10’ to 15’
  • Urban parks use medium spacing, 15’ to 25’
  • Sprawls & paths that define leisure areas with low foot traffic use 30+ spacing

Naturally spacing depends on the light source and optics.

  • How much ambient light is available from other sources
  • Is safety or the illusion of safety a concern
  • Is the light decorative or there to be functional

The optics of a bollard affects the distribution of the light and consequently spacing

  • Reflector and louver optics
    • Minimize light trespass and
    • Radically limit the range of the light to about 5 or 6 feet.
  • Type 5 glass facilitates the light to travel substantial distances.
    • 35’ to 40’ might be sufficient in the right location using high wattage
    • High lumen output would have significant drawbacks
      • A lamp shielded only by frosted glass may be blinding (horizontal plane glare)
      • Light uniformity levels in many cases will not be met
