2014 LED Revenue Growth Exceeds 100 Percent for Access Fixtures

WORCESTER, Mass., Nov. 25, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Access Fixtures has announced that revenue from sales of LED products has exceeded a growth of 100 percent in a year-over-year analysis. Continuous advancements in LED technology enable the use of LED lighting in an increasing number of applications. Categories that have seen the largest growth include LED bollard lights, LED wall packs, and LED flood lights. LED product sales now exceed 50 percent of Access Fixtures’ total revenue. “As prices fall and efficacy increases, property managers realize the value achieved by a lower energy cost and reduced or eliminated maintenance,” said Access Fixtures CEO, Steven Rothschild. He continued, “While we typically wait until after the new year to announce revenue growth, LED sales have already achieved extraordinary growth and that was worth announcing.” While the vast majority of LED product sales are new luminaires, Access Fixtures has also seen an increase in LED retrofit kits for wall packs. This shows that there’s an increase of property managers who are updating existing luminaires from other sources to LED. LED lighting is constantly improving in efficacy, energy efficiency, and light quality. These improvements make LED the ideal choice for a number of applications. Many LEDs are now rated LM70 at 100,000 hours, meaning they maintain 70 percent of their initial light output after 100,000 hours of use. Compared to traditional light sources, this drastically reduces the maintenance required for the luminaire. LEDs are also increasing in lumens per watt, making them more energy-efficient while achieving a greater light output. Lighting a Dark Sky Compliant Sports Court in Massachusetts

A customer recently contacted Access Fixtures for a solution in lighting their combination basketball and tennis court. The backyard sports court had no lighting installed, which limited the number of hours that he and his family could play on the courts. Adhering to the town’s strict dark sky compliance regulations and the additional cost added to his energy bill were the customer’s primary concerns. Backyard sports courts are an increasingly popular addition to residential homes. They provide hours of entertainment, exercise, and bonding for families who use them regularly. However, without adequate lighting, most families can only use their courts for a few hours before dark. Traditionally, sports courts are illuminated with pulse start metal halide (PSMH) luminaires which tend to be cheaper than other options, such as LED. Although PSMH may be a smaller investment at installation, they tend to have a shorter lifespan than LED luminaires and do not provide much directional control. In order to “throw” the light across the court, PSMH fixtures must be tilted upward which can cause light to spill out where it isn’t wanted. In a dark sky compliant city, light pollution becomes a major concern. Residential neighborhoods make the challenge of containing the spread of light even harder, as neighbors are likely to be annoyed by any bright light shining through their windows after dark. Access Fixtures specialist, Dan Rodriguez, was able to provide an affordable solution with LED luminaires. The 378W High Output LED 23’’ Outdoor Flood Light luminaires have a forward throw option—meaning the light still shines across the court, even if the fixture itself is angled straight down....

Hotel Installs Vandal Resistant LED Lighting from Access Fixtures

Access Fixtures received a call from a Comfort Suites property manager looking for energy efficient LED lighting for the grounds of the hotel. The first area to light was the walkways and front driveway of the hotel. Next, the property manager wanted to add some parking lot lighting as well as light-up two flag poles on the property. Lighting specialists were able to provide LED bollards, LED Vandal Resistant Landscape lighting, and LED flood lights to the hotel. The LED landscape lighting luminaires were suggested because they are vandal-resistant and will be able to withstand anyone walking along the grounds, children kicking the fixtures, or lawnmowers hitting them.
The property manager needed to add area lighting around the entrance of the hotel, so LED bollard lights with LG LED modules were used. The reflector used is our newest specialized aluminum cone to maximize the light output. The LED landscape lighting also uses the LG LED modules to help make them vandal-resistant by removing the lens. The last fixture used is a 16” high output LED flood light that will be used to light a small parking area. All the fixtures will reduce maintenance due to rated lives of 50,000 hours or more. In addition, we were able to match the Kelvin temperature of the lights across all the fixtures to provide consistency throughout the property.
To find a solution for your lighting project, contact an Access Fixtures lighting...

Light Trespass Regulations – Can They Cross the Line?

Light trespass—or when light is spilled onto unwanted areas—can be a major issue for communities without any type of regulation. It’s understandable that neighbors do not want light from an adjoining property shining into their home via their bedroom windows, so these regulations are necessary. Recently a customer called Access Fixtures looking for expertise for their sports lighting project in a community with extremely strict lighting regulations. The community had decided they would try to eliminate light trespass through regulation and permits. To do this, they would not authorize any construction projects that created light trespass of more than 0.15 footcandles, which is a very low measure. Here is the problem: How do you measure light trespass when the measurement is so low, that it’s negligible? Every project in the community is required to submit a photometric analysis of the potential light trespass that could occur from the project. The strict regulation presents more problems than initially meets the eye. Light from inside a modern building with a lot of glass would certainly cast light outside. It’s possible for 10 to 80 footcandles to escape through the glass, which would generate more than .15 footcandles of light trespass before any outdoor lighting was installed. A residential glass sliding door could easily exceed 0.15 footcandles. While this is not a dark-sky compliance issue, it would still throw off the footcandles. Flood lights in a backyard would almost certainly exceed the limit. Using post-top lamps or a bollard lights would be almost impossible to use and therefore it would be difficult to safely illuminate a walkway. The customer in question wanted...

10 Breakout Lighting Products for 2015

Lighting technology is constantly advancing with new groundbreaking products released each year. Access Fixtures lighting specialists compiled a list of the top breakout products for 2015 that they predict will be the most useful by property managers, electrical contractors and sports complexes. These products are the solution to common lighting needs, like superior light output, energy efficiency, dark-sky compliance, vandal-resistant and wildlife-friendly. Of course, It’s no secret that LED is now the ideal solution for most of these requirements. Which products made the list? 378w High Output LED Flood Light Finally, there is an affordable replacement for 1000 watt metal halide 23” shoebox luminaires. LED technology is now powerful enough to illuminate large outdoor areas. The 378w high output LED flood light provides the light output comparable to a 1,000w metal halide and the LEDs are rated for 70% lumen maintenance at 100,000 hours. 36w LED Full Cutoff Wall Pack Wallpack_C-2TThe energy-efficient 36w high output LED full cutoff wall pack is dark-sky compliant limiting light trespass and light pollution, while saving energy and reducing maintenance. Now 36w suffice, replacing 150w to 175w HID light sources. 95w Amber LED Area Light In many areas, excessive artificial lighting can harm wildlife, like sea turtles that need a dark sky to orient towards the ocean. For this reason, many states, cities and towns are adding ordinances that require wildlife-friendly lighting. Many species cannot see longer wavelengths like 590 nm used in amber LEDs. The 95w amber LED area light is an energy-efficient solution to safely illuminate areas without harming wildlife. 12w LG LED Bollard Light With Specialized Cone Reflector The metal halide...
