Duke Energy, in partnership with the Sea Turtle Conservancy and Clearwater Marine Aquarium, has converted more than 2,500 coastal lighting fixtures in Pinellas County, Florida to longer-wavelength amber LEDs — 91% of the county's coastal lighting footprint. The program is the largest utility-led coastal lighting conversion for sea turtle protection in the US and a direct model for coastal municipalities, counties, and property managers across Florida's Gulf and Atlantic coasts.

What the Duke Energy Program Did

The conversion program targeted the coastal roadway, parking, and pathway lighting that produces the most direct disorientation risk for sea turtle hatchlings during nesting season. Standard white LEDs — even warm white at 2700K–3000K — emit significant blue and green spectrum light that hatchlings orient toward, drawing them away from the ocean toward roads, storm drains, and other hazards.

The amber LEDs used in the program produce light at wavelengths of 560nm and longer — outside the peak visual sensitivity range of sea turtles. Hatchlings that emerge from nests adjacent to amber-lit roads and parking areas are far less likely to orient toward the artificial light source, allowing them to follow the natural brightness of moonlight and starlight on the ocean surface toward the water.
