Mid Hinged Light Poles

Mid hinged light poles are high mast light poles constructed with a pivot point near the middle and a raising and lowering system that makes it possible for one person to safely raise and lower the pole.

Reasons to Choose Mid Hinged Poles

  • Easier to service whatever is at the top of the pole
    • While LED lights have eliminated the need to change bulbs, the addition of solar and wind powered lights has increased the need to service what is at the top of a high mast pole
  • No climbing required so it is safer
    • Instead of climbing the pole to service what is mounted at the top of the pole, the top of the pole comes to you. Mid hinge poles eliminate the need to climb the poles
  • Pole can be easily lowered to stay out of view
    • Many times, light poles interrupt a spectacular sunset or landscape. Mid hinge poles can be lowered, so the top half of the pole is out of view until the pole and lights are needed.

Mid Hinged Pole Features

Mid hinged poles are built for ease of use. Key features are noted below.

  • Raising and lowering can be performed by a single operator
  • Raising and lowering takes only one minute
  • Multiple raising and lowering options are available
    • Hand winch
    • Motorized winch
    • Counterbalance weight

Mid Hinged Pole Height and Mechanisms

All mid hinged pole structures are designed, engineered, and manufactured to the specifications required. Consequently, there isn’t a hard and fast limit to the height or the amount of equipment that can be mounted on mid-hinged poles. The typical maximum height range for mid hinged poles has been 65’ and under. Normally there are 2-4 lights on the top of the pole.

The most common mechanism for operation is a winch with or without counterweights depending on the weight of the equipment on the pole and the height of the pole. We can install a hand winch or motorized winch with a steel cable).  95% of the time, the customers opt for a hand winch instead of a motorized winch. Counterweight balance is used to make the operation easier. Speed is controlled by the operator.

As the photo on the left demonstrates, just about anything is possible. The photo is of a wind turbine mounted on a mid hinged pole with counterweights and a winch. The structure on the bottom is a quick base that sits on the ground. It does not require a massive concrete base for installation. The location is the artic.

Comparing Mid Hinged Poles with Base Hinged Poles

What is the difference between mid-hinged light poles and base hinged light poles? Obviously mid hinged light poles have a pivot point in the middle and base hinged poles have a hinge at the base. The difference is performance.

Mid-hinged light poles need only one person to raise and lower the pole and it takes about a minute. It is easy to raise the pole up and down.

Base hinged light poles require a lull or crane to raise and lower the pole. When raising a base hinged pole, there isn’t any leverage and there isn’t an internal mechanism to raise and lower the pole.
