32w LED Turtle & Wildlife Friendly Full Cutoff Wall Pack
Are you still unsure about updating to LED? LED technology continues to advance, expanding the reasons to use LED instead of traditional lighting technologies like metal halide or high pressure sodium. In a previous blog, Access Fixtures compared the performance and energy savings between an LED bollard light and a metal halide bollard light. Now, we’ll take a look at the difference between a 150w Metal Halide Wall Pack and a 32w LED Full Cutoff Wall Pack.

70w Pulse Start – Metal Halide (PS-MH) Mini Wall Packs
LED vs. Metal Halide Performance
First, let’s look at performance. At 4,000 hours, the metal halide wall pack emits 3,780 luminaire lumens while the LED wall pack emits 4,468 lumens. As far as lumen output is concerned, the light levels are similar. However, the metal halide wall packs emits 20.3 lumens per watt while the LED wall pack emits a significant increase of 139.6 lumens per watt. Furthermore, the LED wall pack is rated for 100,000 hours which is TEN TIMES longer than the metal halide wall pack.

Energy Costs Breakdown
Let’s investigate energy costs. The 150w metal halide wall pack uses a total of 186 watts when including the energy used by the lamp and ballast. The 32w LED wall pack uses only 32 watts. Essentially, the metal halide wall pack uses 154 more watts in order to deliver the same lumens as the LED wall pack. Based on an estimated use of 10 hours a day, 7 days a week, the cost to run a metal halide wall pack would be $169.26 a year. The LED wall pack only costs $29.08 per year to operate.
Since the lamps need to be replaced, the metal halide wall pack requires maintenance. On average, the metal halide lamp would need to be replaced every 10,000 hours. That is approximately ten times over the span of ten years, totaling $133.80 in replacement costs. In that same time period, an LED wall pack would not require maintenance since it is rated to last 100,000 hours.
In combination with energy costs and replacement lamps, how much do the savings amount to? Over ten years, the operating costs for a 150w metal halide wall pack would total $1,826.40. The 32w LED wall pack would only total $291.20 in operating costs, for a difference of $1,535.20 in savings.
If it weren’t obvious to switch to LED before, the choice has become increasingly obvious for most applications. To calculate what you could be saving with LED, check out the cost per watt chart or contact an Access Fixtures lighting specialist.
