Luminaires with LEDs That Look Like HPS
While “Can I get luminaires with LEDs that look like HPS” may seem like a bizarre question, it is not. The question came from a customer who needed new low-maintenance, energy-efficient lighting that matched his existing fixtures. The answer? LEDs that look like HPS (high pressure sodium) lighting. Why would anybody want that? HPS is 2200K lighting, which means its light is distinctly yellow. HPS is also about 22 CRI. That means the emitted light doesn’t do a terrific job rendering color. Using HPS limits our ability to see the colors of objects underneath it.
Why Would Somebody Want Luminaires with 2200K LEDs?
The primary reason someone might want LEDs that look like HPS is aesthetics. If all the light around an area is HPS, LEDs that emit higher Kelvin, white light will stick out and reduce the ambiance. In historical districts—depending on the age of the district—the original lights were oil or gas lamps that emitted 1850K light. The light had a extremely yellow glow to it. Eventually, oil and gas light sources gave way to the first incandescent lighting, the first source of electrical light. The early sources of incandescent light used heavy filaments, so those lights emitted a warm glow, just like the gas and oil lights. HPS, which eventually replaced incandescent, emits yellow light, too, though it is measured at around 2200K. Given the long history of this yellow-orange light, you won’t likely want to introduce bright-white LEDs in a historic district.
